Facts about Shaken Baby Syndrome
Siblings of SBS victims are left to suffer silently and many go on to have relationship issues with dire consequences as well as stress disorders.
The abusers NEVER pay the cost for hospitalizations, court and lawyer fees, therapy, and continues medical care, special education and living expenses;YOU DO!
Victims' families, tax payers, and insurance companies are responsible for what the Texas Brain injury Association estimate cost that can easily reach $3 Million for a lifetime of care for a single victim,
A baby could fall from a height of 3 stories and not sustain as severe an injury as a shaken baby!
SBS PREVENTION WORKS!
SBS cases were reduced by 47% over 5 years in the Western New York State In- Hospital Program for parents of newborns that received SBS education.
Parents surveyed 3 to 4 months after participating in the Massachusetts program remembered the information learned without prompting and reported using the new information about crying and infant soothing in caring for their babies. Over two-third reported they had shared the information with their child's other caregivers.

Caretaker Abuse in Uganda
Although this is not a case of Shaken Baby Syndrome, I still find it extremely important to report cases around the world of similar types of child abuse. The abuser in this video is the maid/caretaker of the child who had no idea that she was being recorded.
This video may be disturbing to some so please take caution when watching.

3. Repeated hits can lead to brain injuries.

Founding of Shaken Baby Syndrome
An American radiologist, John Caffey, coined the name whiplash shaken infant syndrome in 1974. It was, however, a British neurosurgeon, Guthkelch who first described shaking as the cause of subdural haemorrhage in infants. Impact was later thought to play a major part in the causation of brain damage. Recently improved neuropathology and imaging techniques have established the cause of brain injury as hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy. Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging is the most sensitive and specific method of confirming a shaking injury. Families of children with subdural haemorrhages should be thoroughly investigated by social welfare agencies.

Parenting Help
- Tips
If pushed to your limit focus on calming yourself. Put baby in a crib on her back, make sure she is safe, and then walk away; call a friend, relative, neighbor, or parent helpline for support. Check on her every 5 to 10 minutes.
Tell everyone who cares for your baby about the dangers of shaking and what to do if they become frustrated or upset, for example, if baby cries inconsolably.
See a health care professional if you have anger management problems or behavioral concerns.
Offer support to new parents in your family and community by offering to give them a break, sharing a parent helpline number, or simply being a friend.
